The Peasant's Axiom

The Peasant's Axiom states that civilization did not begin with the first tool, city, or king, but with the first healed bone. It is grounded in the palaeontological evidence of care—like the Neanderthal Shanidar 1, who survived severe injuries only through years of communal support. This defines the foundational act of human society not as an expression of power, but as an act of compassion. Therefore, the axiom concludes that the true measure of any civilization is its proactive kindness toward the vulnerable, and by this definition, any act or system that is fundamentally unkind is inherently uncivilized. A self evident principle, axiom, if you like, born of ordinary folk doing their usually extraordinary acts of care and kindness on a daily basis, peasants, just like me, writing this.

The Human Codec

The Human Codec is the practical, three-part audit tool derived from the axiom. It provides a universal test for any law, policy, or system: does it pass the Preservation, Agency, and Reconciliation tests for the most vulnerable person it affects?

Specifically:

1. Does it actively preserve their life and basic well-being?
2. Does it protect or enhance their capacity for meaningful action and self-determination?
